Rio de Janeiro, December 11, 2023

The Neoenergia Institute is among the signatories of the Brazilian Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change. The document was launched during the Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) that will take place until December 12 in Dubai. Brazil is the first country in the Southern hemisphere to launch its own commitment.

By joining the commitment, the Neoenergia Institute brings together other philanthropy institutions and Brazilian social investors associated with the Group of Institutes, Foundations and Companies (GIFE) in several actions structured in eight axes.

For Renata Chagas, CEO of the Neoenergia Institute, membership, in addition to being a milestone to promote even more sustainable initiatives, is an instrument to support philanthropy and national private social investment in the climate change agenda”. According to her, the signing also represents “an opportunity to expand the promotion of the preservation of biodiversity and work with territories, as well as to assist in the development of projects based on climate solutions considering the environment and people”.

The document provides for measures aimed at education and learning about the causes, impacts, and systemic solutions of climate change and the implications for work; allocation of financial resources and efforts to accelerate the mitigation of climate change; systemic vision of initiatives for a world with emissions net zero; equity, funds, and financial assets to reduce the impacts of climate change; measures to minimize the climate impact of operations carried out by the philanthropic sector itself; articulation, influence, and advocacy for articulated and collaborative action; positioning and identity/uniqueness to diversify and complement visions and approaches to the climate agenda; and continuous learning and transparency in the actions taken.

Built collaboratively in a process of extensive listening to different leaders and organizations, the document marks Brazilian action in the international #PhilanthropyForClimate movement, in which countries such as Canada, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom already have their national commitments. The purpose of the agreement is to serve as a common platform for action, learning, and coordination of national philanthropy efforts in climate action.
