Instituto Neoenergia supports the creation of the Baixadas Observatory, an innovative initiative to combat climate change

9/14/24

Project designed by the COP das Baixadas aims to promote climate adaptation practices in lowland regions in Brazil

The Neoenergia Institute, in partnership with the organizations COP das Baixadas and Perifa Connection, launched the Baixadas Observatory in Belém (PA) last Friday (13). This is an unprecedented and innovative initiative to combat climate change in lowland areas. The Baixadas Observatory will develop a digital platform with a space for engagement that will facilitate the participation of communities in those territories in the creation of adaptive solutions and policies, ensuring that traditional needs and knowledge are considered. In practice, the project places losses at the top of the climate debate and in the implementation of solutions

.

Como parte do seu compromisso com o Pillar of Biodiversity and Climate Change | Neoenergia , o Institute started its support for the Baixadas Observatory. The project emerges as an essential response to the growing threats of floods, floods and extreme droughts, which especially affect the most vulnerable urban areas, such as lowlands, which are regions with little or no difference in relief in relation to sea level or to the banks of rivers and bodies of water

.

According to the most recent available data, approximately 30% to 35% of favelas and urban communities are technically communities in the lowlands, or lowlands. The data was prepared from the crossing of data relating to Favelas and Urban Communities (2019, IBGE), together with data from Brazilian geomorphology (SGB, 2024); thus, allowing the calculation of areas of urban communities present in lowland areas (plains) and comparing this value with the total area of urban communities in

Brazil.

Among the various actions to be carried out by the initiative, the creation of a digital platform stands out, which will include: interactive atlas of regions with drainage characteristics and potential hydrological climate risks; real-time sharing of climate conditions and possible extreme weather events; digital library with robust information on changes climate; space for the population of the lowlands to publish projects and claims that meet their needs; and dissemination of climate and socio-environmental research

.

“Supporting a project such as the Baixadas Observatory is a commitment by the Neoenergia Institute to promote the search for complex answers by those who suffer the most from the effects of climate change, who are the most vulnerable territories and people. We have very positive expectations about the ability of our partners to develop this solution”, highlights Renata Chagas, CEO of the Neoenergia

Institute, about the importance of the partnership.
