National System Operator (ONS) estimates an increase of 5.8% in energy consumption due to the heat wave in most Brazilian states

At least until next Friday, September 29th, most Brazilian cities are expected to record temperatures above the historical average, in what is being called a “heat wave”. In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, for example, thermometers are expected to cross 42ºC at a time of historically milder temperatures. In the interior of Bahia, one of the states most affected by the phenomenon, some cities are already recording 35ºC.

During this period, electricity consumption is expected to rise by 5.8% compared to the same period last year, as estimated by the National System Operator (ONS), and represents an additional 75.2 thousand megawatts (MW) consumed.

Tips

- Optimize the use of the electric shower by adjusting it to the “summer” position. The lower the water temperature, the lower the consumption.

- Adjust the air conditioner thermostat to 23°C and use the timer to avoid unnecessary operation.

- After cooling the room with the air conditioner, use fans to maintain a pleasant temperature. Remember to keep them clean for economic performance.

- Avoid opening the refrigerator frequently, as the input of heat increases energy consumption. Make sure the appliance is in a well-ventilated place, with a space of at least 15 centimeters between it and the walls/cabinets. Periodically check the sealing rubber to avoid wasting energy.

- Use electric ovens and irons sparingly. Optimizing the use of these devices avoids turning them on and off frequently.
