Wind power: winds from Northeast
Until recently, wind power was considered an “alternative" generation source, but, due to its extraordinary growth in Brazil during the last decade, it became a consolidated source and now plays a key role in Brazilian energy matrix. The jump in installed capacity of wind plants nationwide is surprising. It jumped from 935.4 MW in 2010 to 12,966 MW in 2017. And, including energy contracted in auctions, it will reach 17,452 MW in 2020, representing a 1,772% increase in a decade.
In Brazilian Northeast, favorable wind conditions caused wind-power generation to set records in the last few years. Due to this, we can say that Northeast is today fueled by the wind. From 619 wind parks installed in the country, 523 are in this region. With the typical reduction in rainfall in the second half of the year, reservoirs become scarce and unfavorable for the production of hydro power. Winds are more intense in this period, thus this unbalance is offset by the production of wind power in full throttle. The good result is also due to the increased number of wind parks. In one year, 81 parks started operations in the country, with more modern, powerful wind turbines.
PRODUCTION RECORDS
Almost 90% of the energy consumed in the Northeast region come from this renewable source and now the region is responsible for generating 80% of all wind power produced in the country. In August 2019, in one day alone, 89% of all energy consumed in the region was supplied by winds. On November 13, 2018, for a period of two hours, 100% of all energy consumed in Northeast was supplied by the wind parks installed in the region.
Neoenergia has been increasingly investing in clean, renewable sources such as wind power. All this aims to ensure that Brazilian electric sector go ahead towards a more sustainable future, marked by the responsible use of resources available in our planet and respecting individuals and the environment. Currently, 17 parks are in operation, with installed capacity of 516 MW – power enough to supply more than 1.1 million Brazilian households, avoiding over 830 thousand tons emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere. In addition, 27 wind parks under implementation stage in Paraíba and Piauí will add more than 1037 MW to the group's installed capacity.
Abeeólica - Associação Brasileira de Energia Eólica - reports R$ 90 billion invested in this generation source since 1998 and forecasts more than R$ 30 billion by 2020. According to the entity, “In terms of employment, total wind installed capacity has generated more than 180 thousand direct and indirect jobs throughout the production chain". The association records 15.4GW in installed capacity. 7,578 wind turbines are in operation in 619 parks, in 12 Brazilian states.
