Environment
Respect for the environment, a non-negotiable value for Neoenergia.
What is the environment and why is its preservation so important?
Environment: meaning and importance
The best-known definition of environment is that used by the United Nations (UN) and Brazilian environmental legislation, which says that it is the set of biological, chemical and physical elements and processes that create the necessary conditions for maintaining life on the planet. Earth, both for nature and for human beings.The environment is made up of the biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere and from it we extract water, air, food sources and raw materials, fundamental elements for survival and therefore for the development of the economy in the world. This is what makes their conservation so important. With environmental degradation, planet Earth and everyone who lives here is at risk of extinction.
How to preserve the environment?
To preserve the environment and ensure balanced environmental management, there is a set of actions adopted to protect against damage generated directly or indirectly by human action.
These practices aim to protect nature from damage that causes, for example, the extinction of animals, the degradation of forests, air pollution, global warming, contamination of waters, rivers and oceans, the greenhouse effect and environmental changes. climate.
According to a survey by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), almost a third of Brazilian consumers (23%) have already changed their consumption behaviors due to environmental concerns, with 41% considering these changes as permanent.
Some actions are important and easy to use in everyday life to contribute to environmental preservation: composting; save electrical energy; avoid using the car and opt for public transport; reuse or buy only what is necessary; collect cooking oil after use; and choose to use services or buy products from companies with an environmental commitment.
Environmental problems
These issues are often treated as beneficial for the development of society, but it is essential to treat each point with great attention to possible damage, especially in the medium and long term, to the environment during the process.
Environmental preservation and sustainability
The preservation of the environment is largely related to sustainability, which enables the use of natural resources in a safe manner, without harm to future generations and the future of nature. Therefore, when talking about environmental conservation, important sustainable practices are also addressed to ensure there is no shortage of important resources for life, such as drinking water, abundant raw materials and fertile soils.
Main world agreements and conferences
In the world
Some of the main agreements signed in recent years are:
Kyoto Protocol (1997): signed during the Conference of the Parties III (COP 3), deals with atmospheric pollution and its effects on the environment;
Johannesburg Declaration (2002): resulting from Rio+10, which took place in the South African city;
Paris Agreement (2015): provides for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming;
Agenda 2030: document prepared by the United Nations and whose objective is to fulfill an action plan with 17 goals to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
In Brazil
World Environment Week
During the first United Nations Conference, in Stockholm, in 1972, dedicated to the environmental theme, it was established that June 5th would be celebrated as World Environment Day. Since then, several initiatives have been carried out during the date to raise awareness among society about environmental preservation.
Due to the numerous positive demonstrations, in 1981, through Decree 86,028, the celebration was expanded, with the first week of June being established as World Environment Week.
The role of companies in preserving the environment
Organizations play an important role in preserving the ecosystem. Awareness, transformations in production processes, changes in daily actions and top management mentality are fundamental points for transforming companies and making them more aware and sustainable.
A large part of the pollution that causes the greenhouse effect and the actions that harm the environment is a result of organizations' production processes. Simple sustainability measures already make a difference and can help a lot in the environmental preservation process.
Companies that are committed to ESG actions, an acronym in English for Environmental, Social and Governance, benefit for themselves and help humanity and nature.
Neoenergia has respect for the environment as one of its main values and its management is incorporated through corporate sustainable development policies. To align the environmental dimension with its sustainable business model and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the company has an environmental management system that enables the development of a permanent, global and homogeneous diagnosis of its environmental performance.
Neoenergia environmental guidelines
Protect the environment and halt the loss of biodiversity
Combat climate change and its effects
Ensure sustainable modes of production and consumption
Strengthen alliances with stakeholders for sustainable development
Committed to preserving the environment and combating climate action, Neoenergia is committed to actions that measure and prove its efforts, such as its own inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, verified by independent auditors. The survey, carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, covers Neoenergia's energy generation in renewables (wind and hydraulic), liberalized (thermal) and networks (transmission and distribution).
